Frequently Asked Questions

Does PVX sell complete guitars?

No. We only sell premium kits. Our kits come with a body, neck and bonus finish guide. The neck comes ready to glue into the body, and has the truss-rod and fingerboard pre-installed

Why are some other kits so cheap compared to the PVX Guitar Kit?

Our kits are manufactured from solid wood, with no veneers. Some other kits use veneers, but do not mention it. Our maple tops start out as a 3/4" slab of Eastern American Curly Maple. This allows the highly sculpted tops that you expect in a premium guitar, not the soft shallow curves of cheap copy.

How long will it take me to complete my kit?

The amount of time varies wildly depending on the builders skills and what type of finish is desired. Some of our customers have reported taking between 40 and 80 hours to complete their kits.

Will you install “Birds In Flight” inlay on the fret board?

No. “Birds in Flight” on the fretboard is a registered trademark of PRS, and we believe that these would cause people to be confused as to whether our kit is actually a PRS guitar and therefore infringe on their trademark.  We encourage our customers to really put their personality into the project to make a one of a kind heirloom.

Is the truss-rod installed?

Yes. The fret board is glued to the neck using a custom air-clamping jig that leaves no marks on the fret board.  The truss-rod is installed before the fret board is glued on.

Does the fret board have the fret wires installed?

No. The standard kit is pre-slotted for 24 frets, and does not have the fret wire installed. The reason for this is  that any inlay should be installed before fret wire installation to make sure the finish sanding is adequate and  even.

What is the neck width?

The following measurements are made before the fretboard is added.  You can manipulate these during the finish sanding of the fretboard edge bevel to suit your specific needs.

  • Width of the fingerboard at the nut: 1.715"

  • Width of the fingerboard at the 12th fret: 2.085"

  • Width of the fingerboard at the 24th fret: 2.275"

Does the body have a belly carve on the back?

Yes.

Can you provide bookmatched tops?

Our tops are 3/4″ curly American Maple that are ripped from what is known here in the U.S. as “4/4” hardwood stock. This prevents us from doing a true bookmatch. Instead, we do something that is called a “slip-match”.

This still involves hand matching the grain before glue-up. Typically our tops look like one big piece of curly maple and are heirloom quality.

What is the tenon length?

Our tenon is 10" long, and has is tapered to fit into a taper-lock mortise in the body.  This taper-lock design, which is unique to the PVX, is what lets this guitar achieve the awesome sustain of a neck-through-body design.

What size are the holes for the tuning machines?

10 mm
